Examining Board Gameplay and Learning: A Multidisciplinary Review of Recent Research

Researchers in different fields and settings have explored learning and board games, and showed that board games are instrumental for learning various subjects such as mathematics, health, and medicine. In addition to learning specific contents, board gameplay enhanced communication, social interactions, and relationships among people with different abilities. Perhaps the most interesting finding with regards to board games and social interactions was these games being a space for individuals with disabilities to learn complex social skills.

The Effectiveness of Intervention with Board Games

The present systematic review showed that board games and programs that use board games have positive effects on various outcomes, including educational knowledge, cognitive functions, physical activity, anxiety, ADHD symptoms, and the severity of Alzheimer’s Disease. Taken together, these findings suggest that board games would be an effective complementary therapy that would contribute to the improvement of many clinical symptoms.
